Using what I learned - Flikr Tools

My sixth graders sign out a book the first week of library in September and we hand out cameras. Students take photos of classmates and then write a 50 word annotation for their book after they have finished reading. They upload their photo and writing to http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/ and they create a Get Caught Reading Trading card.

Fair Use

Hi. Here is breaking news that will be helpful for all of us.
The Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Media Literacy Education was released on Tuesday, November 11, at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Now, thanks to a coordinated effort by the media literacy community, supported by experts at American University and Temple University, teachers and students have a guide that simplifies the legalities of using copyrighted materials in an academic setting

Safari Montage Workshop IU22 Nov.12, 1008

Chicago public schools create training documents and publish them for staff development.
Video such as the Obama acceptance speech was posted for the Chicago district by the Nov.5 for all students and staff to view.
Students can sign on.
Uploading content is still a discussable issue.
Curriculum coordinators could have a meeting each week at Safari Live every week at a certain time.

I took the survey and will be attending a Pennsylvania State wide 2.0 networked conference on Friday, September 19. I feel ready to enter into this world with other teachers from across the state. I did make presentation about web 2.o tools to teachers in my summer workshop. Much of this content I learned from this course. Get Your Brain In Gear - the future of education.
What I like best so far was what I learned from Bob Sprankle and his Bit by Bit podcast of how podcasting increases oral fluency and blogging will improve student writing. http://bobsprankle.com/bitbybit_wordpress/This makes so much sense to me.

Week Nine C E-Books

I though I knew about e-books until I completed this lesson. I enjoyed Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures Under Ground. I really like the links at the Best Places to Get Free Books" site. I really enjoy audio books in my iPod to listen to on my drive to work. Last year we had Bruce Coville at our school and I downloaded many of his audio books and listened in the car and shared them by attaching my iPod to my boombox. I really like the Fullcast audio productions and have Playaways circulating at my school. I wasn't crazy about the robotic readings at Project Gutenberg.

Week Nine B - Podcasts

I really like podcasts. I subscribe to several and always enjoy listening in the car with my iPod. I have made podcasts using Audacity with kids and even have them in my iPod. I don't like the randomizing colors of Windows Media Player and think I will be more of a user of this technology when I use video podcasts or vodcasts. I want to have kids improve their oral fluency when they read into a microphone for a wider audience. I do like the music from royaltyfreemusic.com to put at the beginning of podcasts.

Week Eight

WE have been working on curriculum renewal this summer at two workshops. I presented two documents to our librarians - the original and a revision that a group of us worked on in two summer workshops. I have now posted them on Google Docs and have invited all librarins in the district to comment. Let's see how this works for collaboration.

I am starting a biography unit with my sixth graders and wondered if Library Thing would be a good place to put the suggestions for the students. I will do a test with Destiny and with http://www.librarything.com/catalog/bauwarter

Week Seven B

I really like trading cards in BigHugeLabs. I think I will start the year with sixth graders selecting a biography and we will take a photo of them with their book - I like to do a Get Caught Reading poster at the beginning of the school year. The second week of school they can write a review and we can creat a trading card in BigHugeLabs. This should be fun.

The above link give some great information about this. Maybe I will have teachers in my workshop create a blog and they will share their learning with others in the group and the blogsphere.

Week Seven

I have been reading lots of blogs and learning about technorati. Guess I will give this a try here. I have been also getting ready to present a workshop to teachers and librarians in my district. It is called Get Your Brain In Gear for a Great School Year. I found a great idea for a lesson plan in one of my email newsletters and adapted a lesson to start off the year with. We will be having author Mike Thaler who wrote the Black Lagoon Books. I found music at RoyaltyFreeMusic.com
and also recorded myself reading from the Librarian From the Black Lagoon. I added pictures I found on the web. I hope to have my sixth graders create movie maker projects on his other books and have the second graders draw pictures that we can scan.
I can't wait to share some of the web 2.0 tools with the teachers and librarians at the workshop.

From reading other blogs in from my RSS feeds I learned about Wordle. I just had to try this. I pasted in an article that I have submitted to School Librarians Workshop for publication about my Movie maker project with sixth graders learning about the Olympics.

Week Four

I have been reading everyone's blogs and set up RSS feeds with Google Reader. I found useful library related blogs and will add some news feeds. How will I every find time to read all of this during the school year? I hope I can add my feeds to this blog. That's my next project!

Week Three

We returned from our trip to Denmark and Norway and I posted three photos on Flickr of the Hans Christian Andersen statue and the Little Mermaid statue. It was so wonderful to be in Copenhagen where there local hero is a children's fairy tale write who wrote over an hundred and fifty years ago. We went to a children's museum with dioramas of his stories such as The Emperor's New Clothes and the Little Match Girl. I had fun in May and June reading Hans Christian Andersen stories to my second and third graders.

Week two

I had fun setting up my blog and creating my avatar. It makes me think of Mr. Popper's Penguins. I have been enjoying reading everyone else's blogs.

Library 2.0 week one

Week One - What are my goals?
I seem to know a little about many things.

• I made a podcast with kids about books for you @ the library
• I monitored a blog for Reading Olympics and for librarians to comment on their conference experiences
• I set up an iGoogle page and signed up for RSS Feeds
• I have an avatar on Second Life but don't know what to do there (I can fly!)
• I have set up a wiki where I posted notes from a workshop
• I made a Voki of me and posted it on my web page for a few days

So..what is my goal - to learn more and better use of the above and then try new applications.

Guess I want to start with RSS feeds.
